Atoms,Elements and More 3/19/17

Summary: Atoms are the basic build blocks of matter.  Atoms are made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons have a positive charge, while neutrons have a neutral charge, and electrons have a negative charge. You know something is an element if it is a pure substance, made of one atom, and is on the periodic table. While a compound is a combination of two different types of elements. A molecule is two or more of the same type of atom. A molecule can be an element or not. Now it's time for matter, matter is something that has mass and takes up space. Matter can be a solid, liquid or gas. Matter is indivisible and indestructible. All the matter in the world is only made up of about 100 different elements in various combinations. The human body is only made up of about six elements however.

SP5: Using mathematics and computational thinking: I expressed relationships between variables by writing mathematical equations. For example, I calculated the density of the crown that matched the density of gold when we had the assignment of the density dilemma. I had to figure out which crown was made of gold by matching its density to gold. The way I did this was by  taking the crowns mass, which was 3474 g and divided it by its volume, 180 cm3. This got me a density of 19.3, which is the same as gold.

XCC Scale Proportion and Quantity: In atoms, there needs to be a stable/equal amount of protons, neutrons and electrons. If you had more than 1 or less than the other you would have an unstable charge. Which is a bad thing for the atoms as it would have to emit nuclear radiation. The amount of protons neutrons and electrons being equal are very important. As well as the amount of protons, neutrons, and electrons define the atom and make it unique.
This week I was a learner, this is because this is a new topic that I am not an expert on so you always learn new things.
