Cellular Respiration VS. Photosynthesis 10/2/16

Taken from the cell energy cycle gizmo

Summary:  Cellular respiration is when your body converts oxygen and glucose into energy. The oxygen humans and animals breathe breaks down, making glucose into tinier pieces so the body can use it.  Glucose, a sugar that your body needs to make energy, is very important to the processes of this cycle. The formula for this process is C6H12O6 + O2 -----> CO2 + H2O + Energy. The oxygen that is in the equation is found in the mitochondrion and the glucose found is in the cytoplasm. During this processes, the glucose molecule is split into two pyruvic acids which ends up producing a small amount of energy.  When the pyruvic acids move into the mitochondrion a huge amount energy is produced, along with carbon dioxide and water. For photosynthesis however, the formula is H20 + CO2 ---(light energy)--> O2+ C6H12O6. The carbon dioxide and water are found in the chloroplast and once you add the sunlight and oxygen, glucose is produced. Photosynthesis would come first however as cellular respiration needs glucose to function.

S&EP- Using Mathematics:
As mentioned in the summary above, there are equations for both photosynthesis and cellular respiration. The equation for photosynthesis is H20 + CO2 ---(light energy)--> O2+ C6H12O6 and the equation for cellular respiration is C6H12O6 + O2 -----> CO2 + H2O + Energy. These equations are not balanced. Meaning that that you start with more and end with less or the other way around. (notice the numbers on equation) For photosynthesis you start with 2 hydrogen and end up with 12. You have 3 oxygen then end up with 8. As for the carbon, you start with 1 and end with 6. It is the opposite for cellular respiration. To balance these equations you need to make sure that the molecules add up to the same number on both sides. The balanced photosynthesis equation would be 6H2O + 6CO2  ---(light energy)--> 6O2 + C6H12O6. The balanced cellular respiration equation would be C6H12O6 + 6O2 -----> 6H2O + 6CO2 + Energy. You are not adding any different types of molecules you are just adding the same type of molecule to both sides so they turn out even.

XCC-Cause and Effect:
In the picture at the top you can see how photosynthesis and cellular respiration form a full circle. This is only possible because cellular respiration products are photosynthesis's reactants, meaning that without one of the other making one of the reactants of the other one, they both wouldn't be able to function. As well as that, you can see another cause and effect relationship in both of the processes separately. For photosynthesis, if there was no light this process could not continue and in the gizmo, you could see that O2 and C6H12O6 were only produced after the sun shone on the plant. Also, in the cellular respiration cycle the Energy, CO2, and H2O would not be produced if the glucose didn't split into pyruvic acids. In the gizmo, you also see that the glucose only moves into the organelle after it splits into two pyruvic acids. Without this there wouldn't be a full cycle.

Multiplier: This week I was a wanderer. This is because when my teammate and I were working on the gizmo I shared whatever information I had with him and vise versa.
